Wacky Wednesday
Denise and Jonnae’s First Wacky Wednesday
Jonnae’s Legacy Lives!
Wacky Wednesday was born of a special experience Denise Taylor and her daughter Jonnae shared during the teenager’s recovery from a bone marrow transplant. Jonnae had received an email announcing it was Spirit Week at her school back home and was saddened by the fact she’d be missing Wacky Wednesday, (a day the student body was allowed to come to school in wacky attire.) Desperate to see a smile that had been absent for weeks on her daughter’s face, Denise suggested she and Jonnae create their own Wacky Wednesday. Jonnae’s smile returned and she lit up as she grabbed Denise’s eyebrow pencil to blacken out a tooth and give her mother a unibrow.
In the midst of the serious, stressful environment of the hospital, the intervention of silliness and laughter proved to be great medicine. The side effects were wonderful and contagious. A dream of recreating that experience weekly, and gifting it to the patients and families in every chidlren’s hospital, was born.
You can help grow this vision into a reality! If as a country we could embrace and participate in Casual Friday for the sake of ourselves, surely we can dress wacky on Wednesday for the sake of blessing others.
- Make a donation to support the purchase of wacky accessories to gift participating hospitals and their patients
- Introduce the program to your office or employer. Your participation helps the awareness and growth of the program.
- Create a Wacky Wednesday fundraiser, centered around your participation. (much like the pay $1, $2, $5 to wear jeans to work concept that launched Casual Fridays)
Once we increase the awareness and participation of this program, we’ll look forward to Wednesdays in a way we’ve never experienced for a week day. We won’t know where we’ll run into the wackiness, but we know we will. And when we do, it’ll be an intervention of silly lighthearted fun that we so desperately need and crave in our serious, stressed out world. Because we’ve created a day that’s more positive, more energetic, and more fun, we’ll be more productive and prosperous!
